ROTRF Research Grant Application
The Roche Organ Transplantation Research Foundation (ROTRF) is a registered Medical Research Charity whose mission is to advance the science of organ transplantation by supporting research programs through operating grants directly allocated to research projects.
Those eligible for operating grants are established faculty members of academic staff in universities, transplant centers and research institutes. The aim of the research must be to improve the outcomes of recipients of organ transplants. Research results are published in the Roche Organ Transplantation Research Foundation “Annual Report.”
The following are examples of the research areas funded by the ROTRF:
- Improvement of long-term graft survival and prevention of chronic organ dysfunction
- Relevant immune recognition, regulation and effector mechanisms
- Histocompatibility
- Inflammation and tissue injury in transplantation
- Development of new agents for use in transplantation
- Prospective and specific analysis of human organ transplant populations
- Induction of tolerance
- New clinical trial methods and surrogate endpoints
- Tissue injury and organ preservation relevant to transplantation
- Cell or tissue transplantation relevant to organ transplantation
- While the ROTRF does not support operating costs for registries, it will consider providing limited support for unique initiatives such as international databases of general interest to transplant researchers.
Although the primary focus is solid organ transplantation, the Foundation may also consider supporting research into other areas if they have implications for solid organ transplantation research.

Additional Funding Opportunities through the New Joint ROTRF/JDRF Initiative
The ROTRF and the JDRF are proud to announce a New Joint ROTRF/JDRF Initiative to support projects in immunology and biology research relevant to pancreatic islet transplantation, and transplantation solutions for human type 1 diabetes.
Established faculty members of academic staff at universities, transplant and diabetes centres, and research institutes are eligible for this Joint ROTRF/JDRF Initiative.
The Research Areas funded by the ROTRF/JDRF Joint Initiative are:
- Transplantation approaches to human type 1 diabetes
- Islet transplantation (including deceased donor islets) for therapeutic use in type 1 diabetic patients
- Development of new approaches (including stem cell transplantation) for improvements of graft survival and/or of long-term immunosuppression in type 1 diabetic patients
- Cellular engineering (including gene therapy) for therapeutic use in human transplantation relevant to types 1 diabetes
- Investigations of alternative sources of pancreatic islets/beta cells for use in transplantation
- Quantification and functional determination of islets/beta cells for use in replacement therapy
Submission deadlines are on April 1st and October 1st of each year, even if these dates fall on a weekend or on a public holiday.
